The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) is establishing a new AI panel which will help shape the UK’s approach to building responsible AI in the public sector.
AI is transforming how government serves the public. From helping NHS staff diagnose conditions faster to streamlining administrative processes that free up civil servants to focus on frontline delivery, AI is already making a real difference to people's lives. Following the government's AI Opportunities Action Plan and the Blueprint for Modern Digital Government, we're now at a pivotal moment to harness AI's potential responsibly across all public services – with GDS leading this transformation to ensure technology truly works for everyone.
To succeed, the UK must adopt AI in a trustworthy way, building transparency, responsibility and accountability into everything we do. That’s why DSIT is seeking expressions of interest for participants in a new Responsible AI Advisory Panel, which will advise and guide how the Government Digital Service (GDS) within DSIT, approaches the development of AI across government.
Your chance to shape the future
This is a fantastic opportunity to shape government’s approach to developing responsible AI for the public good across the public sector, ensuring that government seizes the benefits of AI whilst minimising potential risks.
It's crucial to bring together the best AI expertise to help the UK ensure that it develops AI safely, ethically and responsibly across the public sector. The panel will provide expert strategic advice to senior officials and ministers on the responsible use of AI across the UK public sector. The panel will inform GDS on best practice, and provide constructive challenge and scrutiny on government's approach.
The panel will meet once a quarter, with an initial one-year term, and will consist of 8-12 invited external members. Panel meetings will also be attended by the Minister for AI and Digital Government, Feryal Clark MP, and the Director General for Digital Centre Design, Emily Middleton.
GDS is looking for panellists with expertise across AI, responsible development and public sector delivery, as well as those with unique perspectives on how AI might affect workers, users and developers. GDS will seek a panel with a genuine diversity of skillset and organisational background, who can provide a wide range of perspectives on responsible AI.
