Dia Nag, Chair, Cabinet Office Women In Digital Network & Head of Product - Strategy & Digital Transformation for Cabinet Office

Before moving to the UK in 2008, Dia worked in India's international publishing and journalism sectors. She joined the UK public sector in 2016 at the Parliamentary Digital Service, later moving to the Government Digital Service and Cabinet Office.

Most recently Dia was a key figure in establishing the Digital and Data Directorate for the Cabinet Office in 2020 and leading the launch of the Cabinet Office Digital brand.

Her contributions earned recognition and were awarded in NetZero50 Leaders 2024, Government Transformation 100 Top Leaders 2024 and “Women’s Network of the Year” award for 2024.

We asked Dia what inspired her to pursue a career in digital and data within the Civil Service, and what’s been the most rewarding experience so far?

“Being part of the delivery of critical products and services used by the public and across government, and having a seat at the table with key decision-makers shaping meaningful change for the country and its people, fills me with immense pride. It has been an incredibly rewarding experience. I am particularly proud of the key role I played in establishing the Digital and Data Directorate for the Cabinet Office.

Alongside my day job, I founded and currently chair the Cabinet Office Women in Digital network. Over the past 12 months, we have achieved significant milestones in areas such as addressing the gender pay gap, fostering inclusive recruitment practices, empowering women to thrive in digital roles through confidence-building initiatives, and championing and sponsoring women in tech programs and opportunities. Our network was proud to win the “Women’s Network of the Year” award for 2024.”

Chris Back, Head of Delivery, Homes for Ukraine, Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government

As a dynamic leader in digital government transformation, Chris has made significant contributions to modernising UK public services, most notably through his work on online conveyancing including during the pandemic and the Homes for Ukraine programme

With a passion for collaborative leadership and continuous learning, he recently achieved certification in scaled agile methodologies and is a champion for the geographical spread of digital and data talent across the UK as one of the government's greatest strengths.

We asked Chris what excites him the most about the future of digital and data within government?

“Building our own capability so that we can continue to build and maintain great services for all of our users. The range of roles, the range of departments and locations across the UK offers so much opportunity that it must be one of our super powers!”

Freya Krol, Lead User Researcher – Labs, Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office

Freya Krol, Lead User Researcher – Labs, Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office

Freya is a passionate lead user researcher at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) following her time on the Civil Service Fast Stream. She has established FCDO's first User-Centred Design Community of Practice and developed innovative training initiatives to nurture emerging talent.

Her impactful work in user research includes transforming services designed to attract, inspire and enable prospective teachers to apply for their initial teacher training at the Department of Education, and planning and leading user research activities on complex projects to advance FCDO’s diplomatic and development objectives.

With a strong commitment to open data initiatives and data-driven decision-making, Freya champions user-centred design principles across government, believing in creating more empathetic and responsive public services through digital transformation.

We asked Freya, what does Government Digital and Data mean to her?

“As a user researcher, Government Digital and Data means putting the needs and experiences of users at the heart of everything we do. It involves leveraging digital tools and data to create services that are not only functional, efficient and effective but also inclusive and user-friendly.

For me, Government Digital and Data represents a transformative approach to how public services are designed, delivered, and improved – one underpinned by an understanding of the real-world challenges that citizens face and using that insight to inform policy, product, and service design. By regularly collecting and analysing data about our users, we will stay responsive to the evolving needs of our users, identify areas for improvement and make evidence-based adjustments to the way we deliver public services.”

Graeme Jamieson, Head of Accessibility, HM Revenue & Customs

Graeme Jamieson, Head of Accessibility, HM Revenue & Customs

Graeme is an accessibility specialist at HMRC and the head of the Digital Inclusion and Accessibility Standards team, which has played a key role in ensuring government services are accessible to all users. Since joining the Civil Service in March 2021, motivated by the pandemic’s impact on digital exclusion, Graeme has encouraged his team to embed accessibility knowledge and expertise into projects like the HMRC app.

The team’s involvement in collaborating with service teams was vital in making accessibility a core part of the app’s development process, meaning they could release new features faster and more often. This commitment has been instrumental in transforming the perception of government digital services, showcasing them as dynamic, efficient and accessible.

We asked Graeme to share a moment when his work has a direct impact on improving government services or the experience of users.

“We are only successful when working through other professions – accessibility really is a team approach and we need researchers, designers and product managers to understand how to deliver accessible services as they design and build. Working with a service team such as the HMRC app, which baked in accessibility best practices to their regular sprints enabled us to deliver a really accessible product and maintain that standard through multiple release cycles, all due to the team’s passion and focus on delivering accessibility by default. That enabled us to focus on providing support and expertise, knowing that the basics were covered – it was a very satisfying working relationship.”
